Shocks and struts replacement in Walnut Creek, CA
The parts that keep your tyres on the road. Worn dampers lengthen stopping distances and destroy tyres — replaced at your address, in pairs, done properly.
What is shock and strut replacement?
Shocks and struts are dampers. Springs carry the car’s weight; dampers control how those springs move, stopping the body oscillating after every bump. A strut is a damper that also forms part of the suspension’s structure, which is why struts are more involved to replace than shocks.
We replace them in axle pairs, along with strut mounts and bump stops where those have perished. On strut assemblies we normally fit pre-assembled units rather than compressing springs at the roadside, which is both safer and faster.

Why do worn dampers matter?
A damper’s real job is keeping the tyre pressed against the road, not making the ride comfortable. When it is worn, the wheel skips over ripples instead of following them, and during those fractions of a second the tyre is not gripping. Braking distances measurably increase, and ABS and stability control both become less effective.
The cost also spreads. Worn dampers let the wheel bounce, which scallops the tread and ruins a set of tyres well before its mileage. Plenty of drivers replace tyres twice before anyone points out that the dampers caused it.
When should shocks or struts be replaced?
Typically 50,000 to 100,000 miles, though East Bay road surfaces and hill routes shorten it.
The car keeps moving after a bump
More than one rebound means the damper is no longer controlling the spring.
Cupped or scalloped tyre wear
Uneven scallops around the tread is the textbook worn-damper signature.
Heavy nose dive under braking
Excessive weight transfer that unsettles the car exactly when you need it stable.
Oil film down the damper body
A leaking damper has already failed, whatever the mileage suggests.
Clunking over speed bumps
Often a failed strut top mount rather than the damper itself.
The car feels unsettled at speed
Floating or wandering on the freeway is a classic sign the dampers are past it.
How our mobile shock and strut replacement service works
Tell us how the car rides and whether the tyres are wearing oddly — scalloped tread is often the clearest evidence. For shock and strut replacement near you in Walnut Creek or the East Bay, request a quote here or call. We check for fluid leaks, measure play and read the tyre wear pattern, which is far more reliable than the old bounce test on a modern car. Dampers are replaced in axle pairs because a new one beside a worn one gives uneven grip under braking, and we will tell you whether an alignment is needed after.
- Describe how the car feels over bumps and under braking.
- We inspect for leaks, play and tyre wear on site.
- You get an estimate covering dampers, mounts and anything perished.
- We fit and road test, and tell you if alignment is needed after.
Shock and strut questions we get asked
Do they have to be replaced in pairs?
Across an axle, yes. A new damper on one side and a worn one on the other gives uneven grip and unpredictable braking — genuinely worse than two evenly worn units.
What is the difference between a shock and a strut?
A shock only damps. A strut damps and forms part of the suspension structure, carrying the spring and locating the wheel. Struts cost more to replace because more comes apart.
Will I need an alignment afterwards?
After strut replacement, usually yes, since struts affect camber. Alignment needs a workshop rig, so we flag it and you book it separately.
How do I know they are actually worn?
The old bounce test is unreliable on modern cars. We look for fluid leaks, measure play, and read the tyre wear pattern, which is far more telling.
